As a single father coming from an underprivileged upbringing, Hector knew all too well the feeling that the odds were stacked against him. But he wasn’t going to let that fear of failure keep him down.

Hector joined the Army in 1992 and served six years at Fort Jackson where he learned to embrace the fear of failure and let it drive him to succeed. Through dedication and perseverance, Hector finished his undergraduate and master’s degrees at AMU and is currently working on his PhD dissertation. 

His greatest joy now is seeing the impact his pursuit of higher education has had on his son and others around him. Hector feels a sense of accomplishment and knows that others are looking to him for inspiration. With the skills he’s learned at AMU, he hopes to help build bridges so others can get to where he is now.

 

How He Did it 

Getting Started

Following his military service, Hector worked at a diabetic shoe company. One day, the CEO took him aside and urged him to take what he’d learned and grow it by going back to school. 

Finding the Right Fit

Hector had been raising his son as a single father since he was two. He knew a traditional brick-and-mortar school wouldn’t offer the support he needed. His research for online universities lead him to AMU.

Building Bridges

With two degrees under his belt and a doctorate in progress, Hector is excited to apply what he’s learned at AMU to every aspect of his life, especially to help those with similar backgrounds gain better access to life-changing resources.  
There’s a great support staff here: easily accessible, great resources, people willing to help you. It may feel like you’re walking this journey by yourself, but you’re not. There are people helping you along the way.
